It Won't Be Like This For Long

Last week on Facebook, several of my friends posted a link to an amazing video. Check it out, because it's simply beautiful; one of those videos that has me crying and slobbering all over my computer desk. It asks women to share what they would tell their pregnant-selves, right before their first child was born.

As I was watching it, I found myself wondering what I would have said to myself three years ago this month, as I eagerly awaited G's birth.

Turns out, Darius Rucker -- yes, of Hootie and the Blowfish fame -- already put it perfectly. If you can get through lyrics without bursting into tears, then you're strong woman (or man!).

He didn't have to wake up
He'd been up all night
Layin’ there in bed listenin’
To his new born baby cry
He makes a pot of coffee
He splashes water on his face
His wife gives him a kiss and says
It gonna be OK

It won’t be like this for long
One day we'll look back laughin’
At the week we brought her home
This phase is gonna fly by
So baby just hold on
‘Cause it won't be like this for long

Four years later ‘bout 4:30
She's crawling in their bed
And when he drops her off at preschool
She's clinging to his leg
The teacher peels her off of him
He says what can I do
She says now don't you worry
This’ll only last a week or two

It won’t be like this for long
One day soon you'll drop her off
And she won’t even know you're gone
This phase is gonna fly by
If you can just hold on
It won’t be like this for long

Some day soon she'll be a teenager
And at times he'll think she hates him
Then he'll walk her down the aisle
And he'll raise her veil
But right now she's up and cryin’
And the truth is that he don't mind
As he kisses her good night
And she says her prayers

He lays down there beside her
‘Til her eyes are finally closed
And just watchin’ her it breaks his heart
Cause he already knows

It won’t be like this for long
One day soon that little girl is gonna be
All grown up and gone
Yeah, this phase is gonna fly by
So, he's tryin’ to hold on

‘Cause it won’t be like this for long

What about you? What would you want to tell yourself, before you had your first baby?

You won't remember this.

And I think that is what scares me the most... Time if flying & I won't recall all these wonderful & sometimes hard moments.

Darn that song, it gets me every time! I think I'd tell my pre-pregnant self to slow down and enjoy every moment with my baby - to cherish the last nights spent in the rocking chair & smell of baby puke (which is exactly what I try to do). I'd also try to explain how incredibly life-changing this new bundle will be but how do you explain that new momma love, i still don't know?!

Okay, if you just SAY Darius Rucker I start to cry thinking of that song. I have VIVID memories driving to school/work while pregnant with Kayden and hearing that song playing on the radio. I would show up all blubbery and teary-eyed. I would definitely tell my pregnant self to SLOW DOWN and take it all in. DO NOT freak and worry so much. CHILL. Time goes by way too fast. Okay, now I need a tissue. Thanks.

Well shoot. I cried just reading the lyrics. Holy moly that's quite a song!

i love this song! my daughter is 14 months and i'm already dreading the day...

I love this! Thanks so much for sharing this video. It inspired me to write a post about this very topic (I linked back to you!) -- http://www.countingmykisses.com/2011/08/16/reflections-of-motherhood/.

I'd tell myself to have faith...everything is going to be okay.

I am reading this a bit late, as, well.... life is busy.

This post. I love it. It helps me think and remember.

It is ssssooooo hard, but so worth it. And as the song says, it doesn't last long! 1 year, 3 months, out of all the years our children will grow; hopefully 50 or more (that we will see).... a blink.
