That Time I Went To Jail

Posted by: Confessions From A Work-At-Home Mom in , ,

DH just brought me home from jail. It's been a rough 24 hours in these parts; we got hit with another ice storm (seriously, I moved to the south to AVOID winter--why are we having so much snow and ice this early in the season???) and the roads were terrible. I decided to drive in it anyway, and one thing led to another, and...

Just kidding!

No, tonight was DH's annual holiday dinner at work. And yes, since he works in the county jail, the party was held in the facility's "muster" room.

It's a funny thing... if your spouse works in a school or an office building, you've probably been to his work countless times. You probably know his secretary. You know exactly where to park to get there.

Prior to tonight, I knew none of this.

DH has been at his current job for the last four years (prior to that, he spent one year working at a detention center in Georgia), so it seems strange that I would never get the chance to see where he works before. That I would never get the chance to meet his bosses (hey there, Sheriff!). That I would never have the opportunity to let inmates serve me and my daughter Christmas dinner.

So why now? Well, DH is up for a promotion, and he feels that it is important to show his superiors that he is dedicated to the job, to the department. And I've found that since I left my job, DH's career has taken on infinitely more importance in my life. It's our source of income, of medical insurance, of (if it lasts another 30 years) a pension. It's also the source of a lot of his friends, and hence, our friends. I've replaced "shop talk" that revolved around satellite shots and reporters to conversations about solitary confinement and inmate workers.

So tonight, after a holiday meal of pulled pork sandwiches, sweet tea and banana pudding (it took four years, but I've come to realize that is seasonal fare in the south), DH busted me out of jail. Here's hoping I don't go back... well, at least until next year's Christmas party.

I like learning more about those of you who read; if you're comfortable sharing...

What does your partner do for a living?

DH is a Litigation Claims Adjuster & in the future will be selling insurance with my dad (family business). I used to work in Higher Education Administration but am now a SAHM :-)

My husband and I both work at the same university but in different areas. Even though we are on the same campus, we don't visit each other much at work. (We are both busy and have different lunch hours.) It is nice to have the connection of working at the same place, but we did not plan it this way.

My husband is a tree surgeon...I do occasionally go to work with him. Which means that I sit in the car and read a book or get out and take pictures while he cars around 2,000,000 pound tree limbs around.

I think it is a good system ;-)

Husband does HR for a hotel. They do lots of family events, so I've been there a bunch of times and met plenty of coworkers. Sometimes he has to work overnight, and I can come and stay in a room and order room service dinner with him :)

My husband installs alarms, cameras, and access control stuff for businesses, mainly new construction stuff. One would think our house would have the best security system around....6 months after living hear I'm still waiting on it. HA!

I don't jokingly call my husband The Weatherman for nothing, he works as a Sr. Forecaster at the local National Weather Service (Circus). It's a little weird as his boss lives 3 houses away from us (we lived here first). He will also be branching out and teaching some meteorology classes at the local community college starting as early as this summer. Some people slam government workers, for pay and benefits, but you know what there are times he works 21 or more days in a row for 16 + hours at a shot. He's underpaid, but there has to always be a Sr. Forecaster at the office 24/7, there are only 5 on staff. I'm thankful his job allowed me to be a SAHM with Little Dude, and now be a student, and still be able to help out with LD's school.

I always love getting to see where close friends, DH, etc. work. Since they spend such a huge chunk of their lives there! Haha that is cool you got busted out of jail. I am pretty sure you already know what my husband does :-)
