Isn't it funny the milestones that signify to us that our babies have grown up?
This morning, amid the haze of getting myself ready for work, my daughter ready for the day, and my husband ready to... well, do whatever he does around the house on his days off... I took the time to sort through G's diaper bag. In reality, we haven't used it in months; it had been sitting on top of the refrigerator, lost and forgotten, a testament to G's baby days.
But amid all the other crap that DH likes to toss on top of the fridge (car keys, junk mail, dog bones, shish kabob skewers, Easter egg dye kits, etc.), something had to go. And this morning, it was the diaper bag.
I pulled it down and started sorting through it. A couple of size 3 Pampers (geez, where were THOSE when I needed them? G doesn't even wear that size anymore!), a bunch of weekly bulletins from church, a toy or two that had gotten lost in the process. Then there was the gross stuff-- dried, crusy raisins; a wipe that (I'm pretty sure by the smell of it) had probably been used at some point; some sticky, gooey, gelatinous mess at the very bottom whose source I have yet to identify.
Once I got the bag cleaned out, I had to decide where to put it. I had a few options-- the attic, with the rest of G's baby things? The top of my bedroom closet, with the rest of my forgotten or out-of-date handbags? Nope. Instead, I went with the most accessible place of all: the hall linen closet.
Because, after all, I might be needing a diaper bag again some day.
(NO, I am not pregnant... yet.)

You might be losing a reader you know. DH the COP has a blog now. (Im doing my guy bloggers are cool dance now)
Why do us guys always throw things up on the fridge, is it because we dont think you wives can see it?
isn't it funny the crazy milestones we have? One of Kyle's was finally getting to ride in the front seat of the car or me trying to remember the last time I carried him in my arms.
I remember the day I traded in the ol' Diaper Bag for one of those small back packs. Ross had a Jansport kid sized backpack for like 6 bucks. Couldn't resist. Once I got everything transfered from the diaper bag to the new back pack, I realized what I had done...and got really sad for a moment. The diaper bag had also been my pocket book...doubling to fit mine & Bree's needs. It had been through a lot with us, and now...I was giving it up.
Of course, I can't throw anything away, so it's in her closet, and now gets used as an overnight bag.
I actually kind of miss the diaper bag days; I had a small, compact black one from Eddie Bauer (I nursed, so didn't need the whole formula bottle water scenario), and I just kept everything in that-wallet, keys, whatever. I hated having to go back to carrying a purse!
we have a permanent diaper bag in the car that i try to keep a current sized change of clothes in for each of the girls...some diapers, couple toys, and a few other basics
keep that linen closet one handy...who knows when you might need it again!
ps--very exciting that your husband has joined the blogworld!
his starter post is better than mine by far!
Too cute. Aww, my kids are 23 and 25 but I still remember all the stages.
Popped over to follow your hubby. Hope he sticks with it.
Sometimes retiring baby things is a tough one it is happy/sad/emotional all in one motion
I go through all of those too, the getting sad over losing the pain the rear parts of parenting.
With the second baby I actually got teary giving his leftover diapers to a friend...WTH?!
After #3, I switched from a diaper bag to a gigantic backpack and now with #4 and #3 (who is almost 2), I don't think I could have done a smarter thing! And you are right, one day you WILL need it again!
wait until potty training days. You'll need a bigger "diaper" bag for the billion just-in-case outfits than you ever did for the diapers!
I haven't used a diaper bag in quite a LONG time.. Sam is 3.. however I keep it in the van still. lol it has a few diapers (he doesn't even wear diapers anymore) and a thing of wipes. Nothing important like a change of clothes or snacks... only worthless items that I never use anymore
Oh, I just retired my diaper backpack too and cleaned it out. Can we say I had a whole supply of stale pretzels at the bottom of it?
Now, I carry a Vera Wang tote that doubles as my purse and a few "toddler" things.
Congratulations! I miss the diaper bags like I miss a hole in my head. We retired ours almost a year ago. It's a big milestone.
Tell DH to get on and write! He has subscribers ... they want to read ;-)
I hope you need that bag again sometime soon!
This milestone is so freeing...for your shoulder that is.
You do realize you will be looking at larger purses because well there are extra kid things that need carrying around.
Have a great weekend!
Well, at least it is cleaned out and out of sight! :)
I never knew how much I needed my diaper bag until we left it in the cit one day and headed to the lake. here we are an hour from any stores and I have no formula, diapers, wipes, toys etc......it's a huge significance to us moms and I think I'll end up framing that silly old bag! Ha!
Aww. *sniffles*
We aren't ready to get rid of the diaper bag yet, but I jut downsized from a true diaper bag, to smaller tote-like bag. I found much of the same stuff when I went through the big diaper bag. Gross.
I hsted putting away that stuff from the "little" days. SO HARD!
In the nursery at Church, I always know first time moms because the bags are HUGE vs by the third kid it's like a napsack. HA.
Oh it is a sad day when you give up that diaper bag....and yet kind of liberating! Funny how we measure the changes in our lives now that we are parents:)
Don't get rid of that diaper bag too fast. Your mom, or mine, might need it.
What do you say to someone on their first day of a new endeavor? Happy blog launch? Well, glad he's decided to start his own blog without masquerading as a woman...um, you know what I mean, I hope...
I was so happy to be past the diaper bag stage. It meant getting out the door was going to be so much easier!
ooh girl, sounds likke you guys are close!! ;)
I was just thinking about how I haven't carried a diaper bag in a while. And that I will be carrying one again soon.
You know, it's funny. I carried a Pooh diaper bag for the first couple of years. He turned 2, and boom, I didn't need the diaper bag anymore, so I got a "backpack" instead. Today, I am delighted to carry around a Sugarbooger Day Tripper bag. It's honestly nothing more than a glorified diaper bag that doesn't LOOK like a diaper bag. I love it.
I converted mine into my laptop bag... I liked it that much.
However, as PT continues, I'm thinking of converting it back to the Little Man for his multiple outfit changes...
Li'l Bit is potty training and I'm going to be sad when I don't have to carry mine anymore -- because it's so cute and I get so many compliments on it! ;-)
I have pretty much retired my diaper bag for Little E. It sits in the back of my SUV with a change of clothes, some wipes and a few random items since we are still having random potty accidents. I went away this weekend and didn't even bring it along. I saved all of Miss K's bags(yes bags) for baby #2 and never used any of them. But going from a girl to a boy, you pick something more versatile and masculine. If you did get pregnant and have a boy, I'm thinking you'd need a B bag.
lol.
I've gone from a diaper bag to a big "mom" purse. I'm not sure which is better!
