You know the phrase, "A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words?" Lately, I've found each and every syllable that comes out of my daughter's mouth (and usually, that's only the first syllable of a word-- our dog, "Ducky", becomes simply "Duck" to her; "Daddy" is "Dad"; there are only a few exceptions to this rule, chief among them "Mommy", "Silly", and "Dora"... obviously, you can see where her priorities lie!) is worth more than gold.

Am I the only mother who marvels at her toddler's expanding language skills? I'm guessing no. But I really am in awe of now how-- at 20 months old-- G is learning a new word or phrase every day. This week, she's been obsessed with the concept of "falling down". If DH is lying on the floor searching for misplaced puzzle pieces underneath the sectional sofa, G will walk up to him and ask "fall down Dad?". If Ducky suddenly leaps off the back of that sectional sofa to bark frantically at those oh-so-dangerous gang of neighborhood bikers racing down the street (aka, my neighbor's children-- Ducky tends to take things to the extreme), G races after her screaming "fall down Duck!". And sometimes-- when she's feeling especially silly-- she'll spin herself to the point of dizziness (this child spins so much that just watching her makes me nauseaus), then drop to the ground, and scream out, "fall down!" at the top of her lungs.

There are other phrases she's catching on to as well. She likes how "Swiper" from Dora will say, "Oh man", and loves to copy him. She's also got a thing for the ice cream truck, which frequents our neighborhoods on weekends and evenings; in fact, just about every vehicle that drives down our street is greeted by G asking us, "ice cream truck?".

But it wasn't a phrase that melted my heart at church last week. It was a single word. We were saying our opening prayer, and the entire parish said, "Amen"... and G repeated it. DH & I both heard it, and gave each other a knowing smile over the top of G's head. She didn't understand what she'd said that made us so proud, but I certainly felt that motherly pride welling up inside... even if she never says another word, "Amen" is good enough for me.

Awww. It's the small things that our children do that confirm that we are making a difference. Little G is such a blessing, what a sweetheart.

Precious! I love those moments.

Thanks for sharing you and your daughter's special moments with us. The Amen would have been the icing on the cake.

And, swiper is popular here as well--the poor older kid tries to hide behind the grocery cart when the little twins break into a "swiper no swiping" chant.

what an amazing moment!

As someone who has taken to praying Mass will end quickly, I love this! It gives me hope that J will one day, as long as I keep up with attending with him, go from saying "No church" to "Amen".

And isn't it crazy how quickly the words are coming & how clearly they are coming right now? I'm lovin' it too!

My son will be three on Saturday and I am still that mother that thinks the sun rises and sets on him and he is the cutest, smartest, funniest little boy that every lived (well except when he is throwing a tantrum cause then that is a whole other story). And you know what he will always be that greatest thing ever! That is the beauty of being a mom..thinking your kidis totally the greatest!

That's so sweet. I love hearing my boys say "Amen". Right now, my favorite word that Buster says is "glory", as in at the end of the Lord's Prayer. He really enunciates the "l" and "r" and it's just soooo cute.

Awwww! That would have melted me into a puddle right there on the floor.

Both my younger boys were speech delayed and I didn't get to experience this joy with them.

What a great word to hear! When my nephew was learning to talk my favorite word he said was "delicious." He always said it with such gusto!

Remember all those proud moments, as they get older. That is a keeper memory for sure!

What a cute post! It is definitely awe-inspiring to see them pick up language so quickly!

Awww...that is so sweet! What a wonderful word for her to repeat! My kids are always repeating Swiper's "Oh man!" as well.

And don't you just LOVE looking for missing puzzle pieces?!

so cute! I love the picture of the folded hands in folded hands! Our almost 2 year old is a bit hearing impaired in his left ear so his words are very slow in coming. But he's been starting to say "more" when he does the sign. It comes out like "mo" and he sounds like he has a speech impediment.
No you are not the only one who feels that way! It's so exciting!

So cute! Cate sings "Jesus Loves Me" now and it totally melts my heart. Sounds like G is gaining quite the vocab.

And if you want to join Melisa and I you can always start on your getaway cruise. ;-)

How precious, that just made my heart skip a beat! :-) I adore listening to both my girls pray, but right now when my 3-year-old does it, I want to get out the video camera and record her... I'm just afraid that would be frowned upon somehow... ;-)

I loved all those moments back in the day!! my little boy used to ask to pray and he would pray all by himself at the dinner table... including the amen at the end! be still my heart! ... now that he is 7 ... its embarrassing mom!..

sniff... where did I go wrong?!
he he!

I love the age of discovery ...Toddlers are the best teachers while they learn ...enjoy!

That is so beautiful...I think you melted my heart a little bit too!

amen is the cutest thing in the world! Yep on the OH man thing too...I hear it at least a few times a day ;)
Happy Thursday!

Aww so sweet! I cannot wait until Ava can talk!!

Hey Elizabeth!

I came over to check out your blog, and was so surprised to read this post! I'm also adopted, and we clearly share the same first name. :) And I know what you mean about how a whole set of emotions surface when you carry your own baby. It's a very unique view of the world, I think, that you and I have. :)

Awwwwwww!! I love toddler talk. Scooby's a bit delayed in the speech area so I get to enjoy the language explosion in spurts over time and I LOVE it. Their little voices are so sweet. And when they mimic with the right words it's like Heaven on earth.

*lump in throat*
They are amazing little people. I still find it mind blowing that not too long ago my babies were in my belly, and now they're here filling my life with more love than I'll ever be able to comprehend...

Now THAT is adorable. :)
