Today... I Consider Myself... The Laziest Woman... On The Face Of The Earth

Posted by: Confessions From A Work-At-Home Mom in ,

Earlier this month, I did something I never thought I'd do. Something lazy. Something wasteful. Something completely frivolous.

I hired a cleaning crew.

This sin of sloth began innocently enough... as a pamphlet in the mail. The slogan on this mass-mailing read only:

"Life's too short to clean your own house."

Well, a big, fat AMEN to that.

I started fantacizing about what I would do with more free time. I would spend hours reading books, light stuff like Emily Giffin and Sophie Kinsella; meaty stuff like James Joyce and Henry Ibsen. I would go to the gym more, and really start taking care of my body. G & I would spend long hours at the park, running, skipping, sliding and swinging to our hearts content.

So I made the call.

I have joined the legions of women who are completely able-- and yet, at the same time, unable-- to clean their own homes. I have joined the group that picks things up around the house on the day the cleaning crew is set to arrive, just so I don't look like a complete slob. I have become one of the women I once loathed; the type of woman who wastes her hard earned money to pay someone else to do her own dirty work.

What is your least favorite chore? Or do you actually like cleaning your home?

*sniff, sniff*

This actually makes me a little sad as I am supposed to be cancelling my maid. I can't bring myself to do it though. :(

I absolutely LOVE her! Being a working/student mommy, just having that worry knocked off my list of things to worry about is amazing and the feeling of coming home to a clean house after a long day of work makes my day so much better.

I have my sister in law to thank for the fact that I even had a maid in the first place. She made sure my husband knew that "Every working mother deserves a maid".

Damn right we do.

Oooh, I'm completely envious! I'd LOVE to hire someone to clean my house. My house looks like a disaster area, haha. We still have boxes that we haven't unpacked from when we moved in a year ago! Will a cleaning lady organize all my crap for me? I feel like I'd have to clean FIRST and then hire someone to maintain it, haha. So I'm totally jealous! Hubs won't let me spend the money to hire someone though when we're able to do it ourselves (just currently lazy). Same with hiring someone to mow the lawn, damnit!

I hope it goes well for you. One of the biggest reasons we have never bought a larger home is cleaning--we can't keep what we have now tidy.

My least fav chore is unclogging drains which is usually a twice a year thing. After emptying have a bucket full of smelly unknown slop, I wanted into the field behind our house to dump it and it started pouring rain. Fitting, I thought, just fitting.

Don't feel bad...my mom stayed home with us & still had a cleaning company come once a week! It's nice to have them do things like high dusting & deep cleaning. I'm not great at doing that stuff. I don't really mind cleaning but I have to be in the right mood. It usually isn't an issue. I clean the house I nanny at and my own so I'm just used to it. I like to do a little each day so it doesn't seem like such a task! :)

Sooooo jealous!! Our house is a disaster five days out of seven, and I keep threatening my husband that I too am going to hire a cleaning service. Unfortunately, he continues to put his foot down. One of these days, though...

Not a fan of cleaning my house...would love to hire someone.

The chore I hate the most..... cleaning hard wood floors & stainless steel appliances..and laundry.

Wait...that was 3. Oh, well.

Congrats!

hahaha! I am completely OCD and I enjoy cleaning. I get a lot of stress relief frolm cleaning, and I clean a lot. I can not fathom having somebody touching my stuff. My OCD would send me through the roof!

Good for you! Moms work too hard to be there own maid! I so wish I could afford to hire a cleaning crew. I hate mopping and laundry and pretty much everything else that comes with cleaning!

A CLEANING CREW? Does the DH know about this?

Can't you simply get some of the people he has arrested to come and clean up as part of work detail?

Wait you have got to be talking about your job right? Someone to clean your office?

I bet LeBron talked you into this.

I hate cleaning...blah and if I had some extra dough I would TOTALLY get a cleaning lady and not feel the least bit quilty

I hired a cleaning service when I was a working mommy...but when I became a stay-at-home mommy, I kept the cleaning service.

As I told hubs, "I can spend my valuable time either cleaning a toilet or playing with the kids."

Needless to say, he saw the value of a cleaning service, then, too. :)

Because...when it's all said and done...cleaning toilets is my absolute least favorite, most hated thing to do in the world. I have 3 boys. Ugh.

I would love to hire someone just to com in and clean my floors once a week....that would be a dream! I hate that chore more than anything, but everytime I start to complain to the hubs an=bout he reminds me of how I pitched a fit to have ALL that hardwood & tile and that I needed to suck it up and clean it...{{{hmmpppphhhh}}
...so can I borrow your for just an hour or so to do my floors? Thanks bunches :O)

Totally jealous. Although my husband is really good about pitching in. And the nice thing about having a small home is we can completely clean it together in a couple of hours.

I'd love to have someone do my yardwork though. I'm terrible at it.

Lucky duck! :)

I hate doing laundry! That is my least favorite chore.

I would love a cleaning team to come in here but it really doesn't need it...I am a clean freak...it would just be nice not to have to clean!

I hate dishes...oh the dishes.... No need to feel bad when I was married we paid someone to clean because we both worked a million hours a month...

Can I move in with you? :-)

So jealous, I really would like to hire someone.

I don't mind cleaning, it's the always cleaning up after other people that I don' like. I keep things picked up..so why can't the other people living in my house do the same...ahem....my husband? LOL

I am so jealous right now!!!

I wish we could have someone clean for us because I absolutely loathe cleaning. There's nothing about it that I enjoy. It's amazing how a crumb will upset the junk out of me but not enough to actually clean it as soon as I see it. LOL!

I think the chore I hate the most is folding and putting the laundry away. I don't mind separating it, putting it in the washer, moving it from the washer to the dryer....but folding it??? YUCK!

My husband really does help a lot but boy wouldn't it be nice to not have to worry about it.

I have picked up for the cleaners too so I was cracking up when I read that!

I hate vacuuming the stairs. It was my chore as a child and I still hate having to do it. And thanks to my loving husband I had to do it twice this past Saturday. Grrrr.

I have a disease...its called I like cleaning! Why couldn't I have been born with the disease of only lays out by the pool with a margarita in hand?
Although I would love for someone to come over just to do my laundry...that I don't love!

I would love to hire a cleaning person, but I would have to clean first so I wouldn't be embarassed about them poking around in my kitchen/bathroom. :) It's sad.

Umm, come this summer, I will be paying my RETIRED parents to clean my house. How's that for pathetic?

Not that we can afford to do this right now ourselves, but I have thought about this topic a lot lately. Definitely now that we have a baby. Both mine and DH's parents have had a cleaning person for as long as I can remember. But DH and I felt strongly (him more so than me) that it was a total waste to pay someone to do something we can do ourselves. That and he doesn't want someone in his way during the day when he's working from home. But the more I think about it, the more I think I would like to hire someone. I hate that the very limited amount of time I get to spend with our son on worknights, half the time I am cleaning. It would be nice to not have to feel like I have to get that done on top of everything else, too. My most hated chore is dusting. I don't dust the easy way (using one of those wands) - I have to dust by taking everything off the surface, windexing it all, etc. Time consuming, and the dust comes back the next day anyway, so I hate it.

Oh so jealous, but I always thought it would be weird to be lounging around the house while someone else cleans my or rather...Bree & Hubby's mess.

I don't mind cleaning, that is vacuuming, laundry, stuff like that. It's the constant picking up after Bree & Hubby that tends to wear me down quiet a bit. Sometimes I question if I had already picked up that toy 5 times already, or if I'm just imagining, although I'm sure I had already picked it up. And Hubby leaves his cups & dishes on the table...and if I'm lucky he MIGHT carry them to the counter or put them in the sink, but NEVER does he EVER put them in the dishwasher. Ugh.

I would LOVE to have someone else clean my house! I loathe cleaning the bathroom more than anything.

I actually love to clean my house! Usually... We just live in the upper unit of a duplex, so we don't have a ton of room so the cleaning is ok. I do not love the clutter that comes with a small living space though!

I am just a little too picky, for now, to have someone else clean my home! I can bet that once I get into a full-time job, move into a "real"home and possibly have another kid or 2 that I might change my mind!

Enjoy your cleaning crew and don't feel bad about it! Working moms deserve a break, too!

Who doesn't want somebody to clean their home?! I wish we had the money... We always had a cleaning lady growing up and my mom would clean with her! I never quite understood it.

P.S. I love Sophie Kinsella! If you like her I would also highly recommend Marian Keyes for some good reading. :)

i'm jealous. i'd LOVE a cleaning crew. i HATE taking care of floors. just hate it. vacuuming, washing, etc. good for you!!! enjoy!

Time is money. If you want to spend the money to have someone clean your house, then you'll have the time to spend doing other things. It's a win-win!

Or you can be like me, and not clean, and not hire anyone to clean, so once every couple of weeks you have to shovel the floors because you're actually having someone over. Makes me think I should get a cleaning crew too. :)

i'm a bit jealous and understand the inner turmoil
the world has changed! you deserve to spend your hard earned money how you like
enjoy!

I don't think of it as wasting my hard earned money. I think of it as though I deserve it because I work all day and I need the nights and weekends to spend quality time with my kids! Enjoy, it's the best!!

I hate all housework, and I am sure everyeone in my house would be happy if I could afford to hire a housekeeper, because right now it just doesn't get done. Like, EVER.

jealous over here too. I wish I could hire somebody else to do the "dirty" work. I absolutely hate doing what will be undone in an hour. I think if I had to choose a favorite cleaning spot it would be the bathroom. Its a small room and can be done very quickly.

I'm on bed rest. I think, as a breeding woman, and for the sanity of my husband, it would be merciful to hire a maid. Yes, and, plus, we're helping the economy. Now how to convince my husband of this...

I would love for a maid to come in once a month and clean my house but let's face facts....I AM THE MAID!

Seems a little creepy having someone come in and clean your home...a complete stranger in your home.

Well good luck to you and maybe you can enjoy some free time. Let us all know how it works out!

Oh no no. My cleaning lady, who comes every other week, is truly one of the last luxuries I would ever let go of. She gives me just a small token of sanity back.

I hate cleaning but enjoy it at the same time. If that makes sense? Sometimes the monotony of cleaning is therapeutic. Enjoy your new found free time:)

Nothing wrong with that at all! In fact, mine is at my house right now, cleaning while I work. I think it was the best investment we've ever made.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the wonderful world of paying-someone-else-to-do-your-dirty-work! Don't worry, you'll soon get over that feeling of "laziness". You'll think, why didn't I do this earlier!!

With 3 little boys, I'm so glad my parents talked me into getting a cleaning service. The last thing I want to do all weekend is clean the house! Because you know how much pee there is on the toilet seats with 4 boys in the house?!

Totally jealous!! You will get over it, I promise. There is nothing like coming home to a clean home and you did lift a finger. I too was like you and would clean before the cleaning lady came. We hired one the last few months of my pregnancy and kept her on for almost a year. It was only suppose to be 6 months but I was in love! Ha! Once my son was on a good schedule I did start feeling a little guilty about the cleaning lady and paying so much for something I could do. We did let her go and it was a sad sad day. Thinking about getting preggers to get a cleaning lady again!! Ha!

Oh and I got the flyer in the mail too!!

Oh, what I wouldn't give to have someone come clean for me! Totally jealous!

Also, I left something for you on my blog! =]

I hired cleaning ladies about a year ago, and it is by far the best money I spend every 2 weeks. Hubby put his foot down about having them come more often than that!

I absolutely despise cleaning the bathrooms! That was my job growing up, and I hate it to this day!

Memories, light the corner of my mind - sorry - that was probably before your time - my sweet MIL hired a maid for me for 3 months after E was born. It was heaven. My house hasn't been that clean in 4 years. I'm so jealous.

Least favorite chore? I despise cleaning out the fridge. HATE IT! I would rather clean the bathroom than the fridge. EEWW!

Oh PLEASE send them to my house!!

I hate it all. I clean, but I hate it.

I really don't like vacuuming. Or anything bathroom related.

Don't feel bad because I have that on my to-do list today - call lady that friends referred me to. There are some things you just can't keep up with, especially being OCD and all!!!

Don't feel bad at all! If you spend all of your time cleaning, that sweet little girl will be getting married in the blink of an eye! I think a cleaning lady sounds amazing :)

BTW, I HATE cleaning our cat's litter boxes....that would definitely be towards the top of the yuck-o chores. That and putting away laundry. I love doing laundry and even folding it, but that whole putting away thing? Way overrated :)

Cleaning sucks! We have other jobs.

My MIL paid for a year's worth of maid service as a new mother gift (she rocks!) And I'm eternally grateful. Its now been almost two years and I look forward to my clean house, every other Friday.
The husband just doesn't understand how valuable this is to a working mom (especially since he won't even empty the dishwasher or the diaper bin!)

hahaha~ I hate ALL chores! but putting away laundry is my least favorite... it is soooo time-consuming. I can't wait to get a maid, don't feel bad! =)

I love that you hired a cleaning crew! After the twins were born last January we hired one or more of my husband's nieces to come clean our house every month. It was just too much with the babies. I got a clean house that was easier for me to maintain and when we were over the hump of the hardest part with the girls, it wasn't such chaos anymore.

Oh... and I like cleaning - do NOT like drying dishes!

You know, for a time my mom had someone coming in to clean our house, and she did the same thing with tidying up the day before she got there! :-) My mom also worked and had two girls, and honestly, if working moms CAN have someone come in and clean, I don't blame them at ALL!!! I know I would! You have enough on your plate and when you get home and you have a clean house, you have that much more time to hang out with your family!!

I find cleaning cathartic, but good Lord I HATE vacuuming. It's the only chore that I really despise, and also the only chore that really gives me a workout. Not a huge fan of laundry, but I'd rather do a million loads than vacuum my house.

Maybe I'll look into a housekeeper...

I love my maid service. They don't always do as good a job as I'd like, but other times the so totally rock - that I figure everyone has an off day.

As for loathing us women who have it...After a month of having them, you will so totally get why we never cared... Heck, I had our cleaning crew before I had J. Yep. By almost 2 years.

Probably know this, but make sure your crew is insured & bonded.

I am SO jealous! The chore I HATE the most is laundry!!!!!

Ohh, such a wonderful thing! My family had a housekeeper when I was growing up, and Marmot accuses me of just being spoiled...but my Mom didn't work and still had a housekeeper, that should justify it right?? lol
