G's Guide To Being Sick All Winter

Posted by: Confessions From A Work-At-Home Mom

If you remember this post, then you already know that we've been dealing with the sickies in our house for a while now. I've been asking myself, "How does one small girl manage to stay sick all winter long?" After studying her habits for the past few weeks, this is what I've learned:

G's Guide To Getting & Staying Sick

1.) Take off your shoes and socks whenever possible; run away when mom or any other responsible adult who tries to put them back on.

2.) When in the bathroom to potty train, cuddle up with the toilet bowl. It's a great spot to find germs.

3.) Drink out of the dog's bowl. Also kiss the dog.

4.) Learn how to throw binkies out of your crib just right so that you're able to turn off the humidifier in your bedroom.

5.) Instead of eating your healthy lunch of fruits and veggies, feed it to the dog. Hey, you drank her water; you're just returning the favor.

6.) Use your milk-filled sippy cup as a writing utensil. Then lick the spilled milk up off the kitchen floor.

7.) Drop your afternoon nap. Who says you need sleep in order to maintain your immune system?

8.) Run away from mom or dad after bathtime, rendering them unable to dry off your hair or your body.

9.) Participate in the "sign of peace" at mass every Sunday, then immediately put your hands in your mouth. Also lick the pew. (Anybody else notice a lot of licking going on here?)

10.) Dig through the trash can, find your discarded kleenex, then proceed to eat it. You gave the dog your lunch, so you're extra hungry.

What tactics do you resort to in order to keep your kids healthy?

Sounds like Bree. & What's up with dropping the afternoon nap? Don't they know that when they get older they'll kill to get an afternoon nap.

Ohhh~ I know all to well how it is. Dealing with 2 runny noses right now! It's not fair when I see kids with no coats, no shoes, and no runny nose!

I do all the "right" things, yet they still have year round colds!!!

That is definitely a lot of licking! Ew, especially, to the church pews.

FWIW, we discovered a winter or two ago that it was more cost-effective to install a whole-house humidifier than to keep buying filters for the little ones in our bedrooms. Maybe something to consider, since it would be a lot harder for her to turn that one off!

Ahhhh. Same theories as The Cute, I see. (No dog or Mass here, but same ideas.)

The Cute has a superior immune system. Mommy doesn't. So I'm sick and she's running wild. And I'm not even the one who was eating garbage! (I SWEAR.)

:p

This was great. We're dealing with the same thing here.

And my favorite is how Hayden will make a beeline outside in a pull-up only after his bath. In 40 degree weather of course.

Sounds like Jonjon. He doesn't like to be dried off. Won't keep his socks and shoes on. He hasn't yet dug in the trash Thankfully! He doesn't lick things though. He does however, stand up to potty now. He has to stand on his stool, sticks his belly out and pee's. When I first saw this I died laughing! LOL He won't sit down anymore on the potty. OH and he flushes the toilet BEFORE he pee's. IDK why. Probably cuz we've had to at walmart sometiems.

It's funny the things that no longer have the power to totally gross you out the door when you have kids. Four years ago I would have DIED at the thought of a child licking a church pew. Now I'm just experiencing mild discomfort. Motherhood is glorious.

I'd blame it on the eating of used kleenex in the garbage cans...oh and the lack of sleep thing! I blame everything on lack of sleep! ~Jen~

My boys were sick ALL last winter. They knew us at the doctor's office. All I had to do was say "hi" and the receptionist would laugh into the phone at me.

Sick? Say what? Isn't that something only mortal children get?

Ugh. This cracked me up and grossed me out at the same time. Not an easy feat. Congrats!

I'm impressed with her throwing abilities. Maybe you need to look into softball and tell them what a prodigy you have on your hands.

I too am impressed with your little one's throwing abilities!!!

THis post is too funny!

My daughter is sick very rarely, but she has an awesome diet and eats a great array of fruits and veges including raw onions and bell peppers, avocados, celery you name it she eats it.... Now cooked food is MUCH harder to have her ingest!

Babies get more resilient with time. She's building up that immune system excellently right now! She's going to be wonderful when she gets older :)

Yikes, sounds like you've got your hands full!
I just try my best to keep away from people with the sickies. I'm also a Lysol and hand sanitizer freak!

LOL! That sounds like my house! They must have read your post!

Awesome post!
We've been sick all winter too (constant nose drip at the bare minimum). I try to get more vitA in his diet (important for immune function).
Other than that... I just remember that NOW is the time to educate their immune systems to prevent more school age sickness as well as preventing allergies.
So, I guess, there are **some** good thing to the sickies. BOO!

twins are too young to know better, but I should...if you drop the binkie...is a quick wipe off not enough! Ha!

I love your list...

germs build immunity right?

Haha just think, she's gonna have a heck of an immunity system when she is done! We wash wash wash hands, use hand sanitizer when we are in very kid oriented areas... and my kids take gummi vitamins, they even have the kind with echinacea and vitamin C!

Elizabeth, I agree, she will have one heck of an immunity system! I am so glad mine are a bit older. I remember they used to be sick all the time too. Wreaked havoc with work! -Pip

lol
did you know that sinks have more germs that toilet bowl? isn't that lovely?

i'm lucky in that my girls are pretty healthy overall
i try to keep them from doing obvious awful things...like licking gross stuff :)
but mostly i let them do whatever and try to make sure they eat lost of fruits, veggies and some whole grains--i think the power of diet is HUGE!
your immune system is must less effective for hours after eating sugar...so i try to limit that too (i know--no fun)
that said...remind yourself that she's building a super immune system and the more she's sick now...the less she's sick later :)

I KNEW I didn't go to church for a reason! Too many people and too many germs!

Seriously though, I have been sick all winter and I don't lick inappropriate things....well, I guess that all depends on what you consider inappropriate.

But definitely not my hands or the dogs bowl!

Totally hilarious and I feel your pain! Except my two passed it back and forth for a month - never having it at the same time. You might think this is good, but I think, in retrospect, I would have just preferred one fell swoop of sickness.

I am so sorry - it gets even better when all the kiddos pass it back and forth! Hold on till summer.

I just pray.

No seriously.

Sometimes it seems like absolutely NOTHING works!!!!! Sanitizer wipes, sleep, good food and then she STILL gets sick.

It's a crapshoot, I swear.

Although I hear putting them into a bubble works well - I haven't tried it yet, but sometimes I seriously consider it!

Heading on over to your NEW FAB site and I can't wait!!

See? Just when I thought there was no bonus points for having an autistic child who spends 95% of his life in our house- you just pointed out that there is. He is almost never sick.

Poor little G.

Somehow you managed to crack me up and gag me at the same time. That is some talent you got going on there, lady.

Awesome! I think i've done a few of those MYSELF!!! oh, and my 3 year old? Puts his foot in the toilet all the time. Awesome.

G and L must be related. Who knew?

Yes the wonderful things toddlers do. I hope she gets better soon. Just think, by the time she hits school she will probably have gotten every cold out there and won't have to miss school:)

HAHA, that is too funny. I go through the same things with my kids! Ugh, the toilet bowl thing grosses me out.

I try to use hand sanitizers on them whenever we go out, but I'm not sure if that helps, they usually put their fingers in their mouths before I can get to them!

Just wait until preschool....yikes.

Since January, two colds (we're now working on our 3rd) have gone from the 2 year old, to a twin, to the next twin, to me, to my husband. We have a whole house humidifier, which really seemed to help with the nose runnies, but this was the first winter we had the 2 yo in her nursery at church every Sunday (while the adults attend class). All the snotty nosed kids she's been playing with spelled our doom. So she's not going back until summer.

Why do they insist on cuddling up to the toilet, running around naked, and licking the floor? It's the craziest thing to watch. Good luck!!!

wish I knew how to keep them healthy. before this year I would have lots of answers for you, but this year both boys have been sick for weeks on end. hope she feels better and soon

That was us last year...sick from November to March. This year Brad has missed 5 days and Em has only missed 2 days. So look forward to next year and you will be nice and healthy!

I think The Cute read this today. She developed a quick and sudden interest in the toilet.

CRAP. (Bwahahahahaha. HA. Ha. Hahaha.)

The blazer? Oh how fickle am I. I skipped over it for a polka dotted chiffon top, marked down from $78 to $39 with free shipping. *Squeal!* But yeah. I think I still neeeeeed that blazer... ;D

Oh yes, Bear licks the pews too- just gross!!!

I'm excited about the new networking Mama adventure. Read about it over on Shell's blog and pumped to join up!

#4 shows she has quite the eye-hand coordination. You should start training it now, so she will get a full-ride scholarship to college. Don't worry about the sicknesses, they are building her immune system.

Julie has been constantly sick too. Her Doctor told me that kids her age will be sick on average of 12 times per year, for an average 2 weeks at a time and most of these colds will be in the winter time...the math adds up to NOT FAIR!!
I hope G feels better soon :)

Haha! I hate the 'everything in the mouth' phase which still lingers at G's age.

Been a rough winter for everyone it seems. I've got my Lysol and gel sanitizers handy. Rule is to wash hands when we come into the house. Does all that help? Nah, not really.

I just gave up... When the Ped told me J getting sick at this age is actually a good sign he'll be healthier when he reaches grade school...

Oh, and maybe I might have bought a child lock for the door to the laundry room to prevent J from playing in the dogs water AND munching on their food pieces left on the floor...

Beyond that... I do try with using wet wipes, but mostly I just roll the dice....

And as a result, we are fighting off a cold now... Ugh.

Hope G gets to feeling better!

When Jacek was about 2 he would like the boxes on the shelves at Walmart. It was such a strange and bizarre behavior.

If there are germs...they will find our kids...ick! and then us!

I hope everyone starts to get healthy soon.

Oh, How I miss the toddler days...I do not miss the sick yuckies days!

Hard to keep them from germs when they are that age.

Just relax a little and warmer weather will soon be here.

You'e so funny!

Sounds like my little one! Last week I caught her licking the cheese from her nachos off the table in a public place. EEEWWW! The people passing by as we ate thought it was hysterical. I saw it as another week at home with a sick kid - UGH!

Spring is almost here - hang in there.

My twins are 4 now, so I think we've moved past the worst of this. However, I'm kind of OCD about hand washing. And I keep hand sanitizer with me--in the car, in my purse, etc....just call me a freak. I think it helps, at least to a certain extent. But the reality is that the more they are sick when they're little, the more they're building up their little immune systems....so it sucks now, but will be better later!!!

Ugh! We've been sick all winter too and we don't have a dog!
I think there's a lot of licking going on here too. Ewwww.....

Ha ha ha....I love this post and will read it a few more times for the laughs!

I love how she can throw her binky just right to shut off her humidifier....she's got some mad skills!!!

And the licking..oh yes the licking...lots of that from my two these days. It doesn't even get a reaction out of me anymore :-)

Too funny! What a wonderful guide, G! My dogs love to lick our son's face, too...I can definitely relate there.

lol!
this is funny!!!
i don't take baby out where there is a lot of people
