Truthful Tuesdays-- REVISED: The Best, Most Indisputable Reason Ever For Calling Out Sick

Posted by: Confessions From A Work-At-Home Mom

36 hours ago, I had this week's post locked, loaded, and ready to go...

36 hours ago, this week's Truthful Tuesdays question was:

What's the best excuse you've ever used to get out of an obligation, like work, school, or chores?
(And did you get away with it?)

It still is, for those
of you keeping track.

36 hours ago, I thought my answer would be something like this...

"'My garage door won't open and my car is stuck inside'-- I know, brilliant, right?I mean, what were my bosses going to do? Come and break down my garage door? Pick me up in a work carpool? Thankfully, nobody suggested that... although I wouldn't have put it past them. It gave me the perfect excuse to lay low for a day, enjoy an unexpected day at home with the G, get some stuff done around the house without the guilt of (A) faking sick or (B) not getting out of my pajamas all day long."

That was an excerpt from my now-deleted, never-to-see-the-light-of-day original post scheduled for today.

Oh fate, you've dealt me a cruel, cruel blow...

So, back to my newly-improved, revised version of today's Truthful Tuesday question:

It's a sick child.

Sunday night, as all you Saints fans were canonizing Drew Brees and celebrating your franchise's first Super Bowl appearance, I myself was trying to fall asleep. Trying being the operative word, because even at that point I was having a tough go of it.

But then, just as my eyelids were beginning to grow heavy, a wail from the baby monitor on my nightstand...

G has been sleeping through the night for 10 months now, so at first this didn't alarm me. DH & I agreed to let her cry it out, knowing after a frantic 60 seconds of searching for her binky (yes, she still uses one at 16 months old; no, we have no plans to take it away any time soon), she'd go back to sleep.

WRONG.

DH went to calm her down, then came back to bed. Five minutes later, she was crying again, so I went in to work some "mommy magic" (all the while thinking why DH couldn't have some of my potent powers). But even my hugs, cuddles, and soothing voice could do the trick. This girl was STUFFED UP. Her binky was covered in a thin layer of snot (how did DH not notice this? wait, wait, this post is about G, not DH... moving on...); her face was covered in snot; so where her pajamas. I got a few wipes, cleaned her off, helped her blow her nose, and laid her back down to sleep.

Five minutes later... yeah, you guessed it.

At this point, I finally realized that she couldn't sleep; at least not in her crib, lying down on a flat service. Every time she did, her nose got stuffy, she had to spit her binky out, and that woke her up. So, I sent DH and Ducky to the spare bedroom, piled the pillows high on our own bed, and-- for the first time in G's life-- slept with her in my bed.

Scratch that.
We attempted to sleep.

Using the high-tech graphic design programs on my computer (aka "Paint"), here are a few artist-renderings of our night:

First, there's the "use mommy's ribs as a drum set and leg rest simultaneously position:
(please note: the green "circle" near G's mouth represents her omnipresent binky)

Then, there's the Greco-Roman wrestling position known as the
"foot to the throat choke-hold":

And lastly, my personal favorite, the
"my daughter, my earmuffs" position:

Yes, it was quite a night in our house. By the time it was all said and done, G was blessedly mercifully asleep. I was suffering from bumps, bruises, and perhaps a broken rib. Oh, and I only slept about 3 hours that night.

In my job, I apply the 5-hour rule of sleep: any less than five hours of shut eye, and I don't trust myself or my writing (hmmm, maybe I shouldn't be writing on my blog right now???). In a job where I can get my station sued because my anchor wears a hideous necklace (not really, but it seems like it), sometimes it's just better for me to stay home rather than risk legal action for a sleep-deprived misstep.

Besides, when you call in
sick at 3:30am with a screaming toddler
howling into the phone, who's going to
argue with you?

So, tell me, tell me do...
Whether or not it was a made-up excuse or a real one:

What's the best excuse you've ever used to get out of an obligation, like work, school, or chores?
(And did you get away with it?)

Losing a good sleep is the WORST and our children are the culprits every time! Nice visual, too! lol

And loving the new design girl! :)

That is a perfectly reasonable excuse not to go to work. The alternative to taking her to bed with you, prop some thick books under the head end of her cot and a pillow under the mattress to tilt her. I also swear by a humidifier.

I really need the 5 hour rule in my house... Alas, I'm at work trying to not cross post numbers into my spreadsheet. BLAH!

As for your TT...

Saying I had the flu to spend the day with DH (pre-kids), only to visit the Dr the next day on my way to work to learn I had a 102 degree fever & was out of work for a week with bronchitis.

Oh the life of a mommy! Sorry you have a sick kiddo. Cute graphics, though :-)

I hope G is feeling better! It's always tough when they can't breathe...makes it hard to eat, sleep, drink... :( Someone else mentioned a humidifier! I agree! If Gracie is the least bit stuffy, in goes the humidifier.

I hope you were able to get some rest yesterday!

I hate the baby is sick :( I always prop the top part of Bree's mattress up so that she is sleeping on an incline. That helps her sleep better, and keeps the snot from getting in her ears, causing an infection. Humidifiers work wonders too. Oh and Baby Vapo Rub, on the neck, feet and chest.

Bree has been sick for about a week and 2 days now :(

I have seriously been locked out of getting my car out of the garage! No joke!!

About 2 or 3 months ago, our power went out... and in our OLD duplex, well, the garage door opener is REALLY old and the garage door HEAVY. So I couldn't get out! Luckily the power was FINALLY restored about 2 hours after I was supposed to get Z to daycare & myself to work. So... I didn't miss the **whole** day. I was kind of sad about that!

I HATE HATE HATE baby colds. The stink and there isn't much you can do about them :-(

Your visuals CRACKED ME UP! I related to them wholeheartedly.... we went to a friends house a few weeks ago and were sleeping in the same room. BIG mistake. We were on an air mattress & every time we moved, it squeaked & woke up Z. So we put him on the mattress w/ us. Same problem, every squeak.. movement... woke him up. :-p So we got rid of the mattress. And we slept on the floor in various positions. My favorite was at 2am when he rolled over, gave daddy a big hug and wanted to play.

I think we ended up putting him in the crib, and I slept next to him holding his hand & rubbing his back. Adorable and trying at the same time.

I just spent a couple nights sleeping downstairs in the recliner bc my little man also had a stuffy nose and wouldn't lay down. The joys of parenthood.

So sorry to hear about G being sick! That blows for all of you!

When I need a good reason for skipping work, I always have a migraine. They usually only last for a day, so I can go to work the next day acting completely fine and no one questions it. I probably have 2 migraines a year, though I have never actually had one.

It is so hard 'call in' when you work from home, and I don't do it unless we really are sick...or something else serious happens and I really can't work...sorry, no good stories to tell.

I have a warning NEVER and I mean NEVER use your child being sick as an excuse when they are not. They will wind up sick everytime. At least that is the case with mine.

love your renderings!!! totally been there done that. except I JUST move my , very, soon to be 2 year old out of my bed for the first time

I'm sorry G was sick! I hope she's all better by now!

Ugh...so sorry you didn't get much sleep :( Hopefully tonight will be better!!

Love your new header and stuff girl! Totally cute!

I hate miss G is feeling yucky and also hate you didnt get any sleep. Enjoy the only plus to a sick baby which is extra snuggles!! :)

Thought I was following before but appearantly I wasnt.. now I am ;)

Love your pictures! I had almost the same lovely experience last night. My son who is 2 threw up in his bed and slept with me after I bathed him at 2 am. He flipped and flopped so much I was getting nauseous! Worst was his head hitting my nose when he mistaken my face for a pillow. Fun times!

Before I entered the real working world, I wrangled days off for taking the dog to the vet. Now, the dog goes to the "late clinic" and gets no extra-special walks after... Poor Andy.

I would love to write a post about my best excuse for getting out of work, BUT it's pretty hard to fake sick when you work for family. I never attempted to come up with an excuse to miss school, WAY back when that was. It wasn't worth it because my mother had this rule if you stayed home from school that when school was over (even if you felt better *wink, wink) you weren't allowed to see your friends that day. What a rotten trick.
I thought your visual was pretty funny. Co-sleeping never worked for me either.

I love the new layout and the visuals for this post. Cate has to go to the Dr. today, so I won't have time to play along on my blog, but in college I got out of a night class to go to a Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds concert on campus by telling my professor that I was sick. She bought it, but I brought in cookies (it was a small class) to the next week's class just to be sure.

Those pics are so funny! I hate when my kids end up sleeping up by my head! Ugh.

Hope she's feeling better.

I didn't play b/c I didn't think I had a story, but I forgot this one: on a Thursday, I told my principal that the next day would be my last of teaching b/c of my pregnancy. I was due soon and couldn't take it anymore. She threw a fit, trying to get me to agree to work the three day the following week b/c then it would be winter break. I insisted I was done. On Friday, she harassed me, saying I needed a doctor's note(bull) and was completely pissed at me. I HAD MY BABY ON SATURDAY. So, even the evil principal couldn't complain that I wasn't in work for those 3 days.

I love all your great excuses, ladies! I'm even more impressed by those of you who have NEVER had the need for an excuse-- WOW!

~Elizabeth

LOVED your diagrams on how you slept! I've definitely had nights like that.
There was a time last winter when I had such a bad cold that I took Theraflu. I was so woozy the next day and went to work (home office) anyway. Not like I was going to make anyone sick... But I screwed up so badly on a project (involves doctors) because of my foggy head that I almost got fired.
I should've call in sick...

Funny you ask, I am living it today. It's mu most critical work day of the year, and I got called out with a sick kid. And so I am sitting at home, waiting for my Mom to come help watch my son so I can go back to work. I linked up. Thanks!

I do not envy you. I hope she is feeling better now!

Love the drawings in your post! Too funny, but sad since it was what was happening. My daughter had a paci until she was a little over two, when I finally said enough was enough as she would wake up in the night if she couldn't find it.

I should probably update ya'll-- G is still not feeling well, and now DH & I have caught whatever she has! In the cruel world of being a working mom, I'm back at work today and so is DH, while G is home with the sitter!

~Elizabeth

Thanks for stopping by and confessing. I won't hold it against you since you said you would pull for Carolina tonight. I almost can't believe that! My husband is a State fan and overall, I generally have the upper hand on him....not so much lately in football and I'm seriously worried about tonight. At least we got that National Championship last year...this year has been terribly LONG and PAINFUL! I'm ready for mid-April when life will be less frustrating. Stop back by any time (just not after Duke whips us in Feb. or March ☺)

We are so there with you right now (x2). Both of our girls are sick and are taking turns waking up at night. I highly recommended the cool mist humidifier, the one we have also allows for a vapo-pad which fills the girls room with a mentholated smell. Then also add in everyone's favorite the nasal aspirator and saline drops to help the breathing.
I hope G is feeling better soon.

Now, I read your post and let me say that last Tuesday I had a similar post. Except our sleepless nights had been going on for THREE MONTHS! Calling in sick due to only 3 hours of sleep is def. ok! I can't function on 3 hours of sleep...I can barely function on 8!

Hope everyone feels better soon..

Oh honey, I don't want to laugh at you but that was so hilarious because who HASN'T been there, right!?? And p.s. - my kids were about 2-1/2 or 3 before the binkies were gone. They're 18, 20 and 21 now and I wish they still had them sometimes!!!!!!!! SO glad I stopped by ~ ♥

love your renderings, looks like it was a rough nite, hope your all better today!

How ironic, I just called in today for my sick 17 month old who I think has a sinus infection. :( My daughter still uses a binky and I think it is fine. I try to limit it to her crib and sometimes in the car but other then that, she is good to go. Hope our little ones feel better soon!!!

Oh I feel your pain (and I think a 5 hour rule is so smart). Best excuse around these parts lately. Snow:)

I just wanted to say hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog today and leaving a comment! I am now follwing you and can't wait to read more!!!

Holy crud, You did have a rough night, didn't you?!! I hope G is starting to feel better. I totally feel for you, that's how Noah was last week too. He's still a little stuffy now, but feeling much, much better (and sleeping better too!). Hope you were able to get some rest since then!

Thank you for stopping by my blog, I am following yours now!
I had the same issue with kids in my bed, they may have slept but not me...and the weird thing is they are so little yet take up so much room!
