In The White Room, With Brown Curtains...

Anybody know which band sang
the lyrics I "misused" in my post title?

I had another post all set to go for today... but then I came across Amanda's blog.

She is starting off 2010 with a series called 'New Year, New Dilemmas'... which I thought synced up rather nicely with the New Year's campaign I'm running along with my buddy Julia.

Remember, "New Year, New You" concludes January 31st, when Julia and I will kick off our month long giveaway campaign!

Anyway, all day today, Amanda is helping me-- and all her fellow bloggers-- with her "Decorating Dilemmas" party. Yeah, this is a party I'd rather not attend, but the fact of the matter is, I DO have a major problem on my hands!

It's our master bedroom...

Ya see, we've lived in our house for three and a half years... and we've done next to nothing to the room where we spend 9 8 7 blessed hours every night.

Sure, we've hung a few pictures...

Pleeeease excuse the unmade bed!

And just last week, finally put up curtains (amazing how much later I can sleep in when the morning sun isn't pouring through the windows!)...

But other than that, our walls remain bare. We have no idea what to do with them. Paint? Wainscoting? Wallpaper (ha, who uses wallpaper anymore? Wait... scratch that... my mom does!)? The room has cathedral ceilings, and it's just so much space that it's an overwhelming design challenge for amateurs like us; and we definitely don't have the money to hire a designer!

So, will you help DH & I make it a
New Year, New You, New Room?

And make sure to check out
Amanda's blog for more design
challenges and solutions!

Do you plan on keeping that same bedding? If so I would paint the walls a soft gold. The bedding is so bold I would keep your other pieces in the room a little softer.

What fun stuff going on! Love the drapes and the frames. Nice touch!

We have a light beige color on our walls. It pretty much goes with any color of blanket/comforter we have on the bed.

I think paint could make all the difference- I love accent walls. Something like 3 walls of light gray-blue and one of navy or something.

I am a fan of paint because every few years I get sick of the decorating and decide to redo it. Paint is easier and cheaper to cover up.

And never excuse an unmade bed. I once read that unmade beds are better and healthier because the air on the sheets will kill bacteria, whereas if your bed is made, the warmth will grow bacteria. Since I read that I only made my bed when we have company over. And by company I mean the in-laws, and that hasn't happened in years.

First, i would pick out a totally awesome color to paint your room with. Maybe leave one wall white, and paint the other 3? GOOGLE decorating ideas! Thats where I get all my ideas from! haha! good luck!

Oh I so agree with doing an accent wall. Three walls in one color and a bolder color on the wall behind your bed! FAB! I have also seen decorative painting on high walls like that. Using a projector or something to get your template up there.

I too totally lack on the decorating skills... so I dont really have any tips.. BUT I love those pics over your bed! Colorful yet simple.. love it! Good luck with the room

One of my favorite songs! It's Eric Clapton when he was in the band Cream and it's actually 'black curtains' but I won't tell anyone lol make it work for the post I say!

Thanks for stopping by my site yesterday! I emailed you back about the guest post. (Would love to!)
What a fun site you have! I love the New Year/New You stuff. And the reminder to make our V Day reservations. Hubby and I usually go out several days before or after to make it easier to get a table AND a babysitter.
Your daughter is ADORABLE!

Paint will do the trick. Just make sure you use an "up to date" color. Maybe check out some pale but warm yellows from Pottery Barn's collection (Benjamin Moore brand).

Hi, Elizabeth. :) Thanks for linking up...not sure if I should laugh or cry that you didn't want to join. :s

If you love your comforter (neat bold, warm colors), then maybe head to the paint store and choose a new wall color that will compliment it, but be flexible enough to also go with different bedding you might choose later.

It all depends on the mood you want...softer colors would give you more of a "retreat/soothing" feel, and the nice reds and golds you have now seem very sophisticated to me. I like them!

Wall sconces on either side of the bed might be a nice change, and go with a modern vibe. You could move one of the existing lamps to the dresser, and put the other one on a side table in between the two windows. Add some TJ Maxx/SteinMart/Marshalls accessories, and that wall will look great. I like your drapes.

I think a new color on the walls would really change things for you. Not sure if it's your style, but a wall quote or canvas with your family's last name/wedding date/whatever might also look nice on the wall with the dresser. Something big.

Good luck!

I think it looks great! Can't wait to see what paint you pick!

about Valentines day- waiting to see of grandma is babysitting!!

I'm sorry, I'm not good at decorating, but I think a bedroom would look good in rich colors, like browns, golds, royal blue...

I am a plain simple gal ...I have no decor in my bedroom because most of what I do is sleep in it...
I love your bedding ..I would keep a light color on the wall behind the bed only and then simply choose come nice art work for the other walls...

Hi Elizabeth -- Thanks for all the great advice on my master bedroom! Wow, our rooms are very similar aren't they? I don't have the cathedral ceilings though!

Just a few suggestions, because everyone has posted such great ones so far.

1) Are you decorating around the art over the bed? If so, I would change your bedding out to something very neutral and then do pops of color with some accent pillows. Love the leather headboard!

2) Paint those walls - wallpaper has made a comeback and I know a lot of people using it right now, but to me it's too tough to change out once you get tired of the look. I like the idea of an accent wall and then 3 neutral walls. I'm seeing maybe red (but not too bright) as the accent and a very neutral color for the other 3 walls. Now I love color, so red may be a stretch! Not many people do red in the bedroom, which I've always found odd since its the color of passion!

3) Can you get an armoire for your TV?

4) I would suggest taller (but not chunky) lamps for your bedside tables.

5) Agree with some of the other posts about the woven shades on the windows. Then if you want to frame the windows with your panels you could use both together.

Thanks again for your advice as well!

Yes...paint!!! Paint is the cheap and easy way to update any room. I would choose a warm taupe colour that matches your bed spread. It's important to make your bedroom your sanctuary!

The song is stuck in my head now...in fact when your title came up in my google reader, I actually sang it! Ha ha ha. It's Cream, of course. Anyway, I say go for the paint! Easy to re-do if you mess it up.

I think a lightish green would work really well in your space, especially with that beautiful dark wood furniture!

Awww white room by cream...love that song!

Great job on the room!

I see other folks correctly named the band as Cream. One of my favorite songs!

I really think paint would help a ton. I like to use the paint selector on Behr's website (www.behr.com) to choose paint. I think a yellow or a soft brown out look good. Maybe a paperbag brown color. Also I think some more pictures on the wall would help. And possibly changing the lamp shades to match your bedding.

yeah, i have no idea what to do with that kind of space!

What about bead board or that bead board wallpaper. I swear it looks like real woodwork. I think that would look really good in there. Love the curtains - such a rich color!

Don't be afraid of color. Slap some paint on those walls! Also buy some accent pieces. Go to Hobby Lobby if you have one- great sales...or Homegoods or even Target!

I love cathedral ceilings- and your bed is awesome!

Have you seen the old half and half- the paint on top half of the room, with a border and a different colour under? How about a lighter colour on top melding into a darker bottom? I agree the sandy/goldy colours too :)

I would love to redecorate my ENTIRE place. *sigh* But the budget is tight these days.

I can't wait to see what you do with yours. I like to visit HGTV.com and look at all their design photos. I bet you could pick on your like and imitate it.

Okay, first...I will trade you my fireplace for your long, double windows in your bedroom! What a great space to work with!

First, I would paint 1 wall a bold color that matches one of the colors in your bedding. I'd probably pick red!

Also...I can't tell if you have 2 arm chairs, or just the one, but I would move it over between the 2 windows under the picture.

Another fun way to dress up wall space is vinyl lettering. You could do a favorite quote...Maybe above your bed and pictures?

Maybe some tall furniture like an amoir or tall floor lamps also.

That's all I've got for now! Thanks for stopping by and sharing some advice with me!

Popped in from SITS! I'm terrible at decorating, so I'm keeping my lips sealed.

Just stopped by from SITS. I say even a very pale blue with that brown would be great. My bedroom is like that and let me tell ya, it is the most serene room. The bit of blue just seems to relax us before bed. Regardless, do what makes you happy. If you love something, it can't be wrong.
