I Stalk People On Facebook

Posted by: Confessions From A Work-At-Home Mom

It's ok, I know you do too.

If you've never seen this video, then I encourage you to take a look... then read on below...

Done watching? Listening? Laughing?

Good. Let's continue.

I first learned about Facebook my senior year of undergrad. Good ole Mark Zuckerburg chose my school as a "test market" for his new "online yearbook project"-- therefore, unless you went to Stanford or Princeton during the 2003-2004 school year, I can definitively say that I was on Facebook before you (neener neener neener! How old am I, 7?). At first, I was hesitant to sign up. I had better things to do with my time. Apply for grad school. Apply for jobs. Party like a rock star... who had time for legalized cyber-stalking?

But Facebook, ooooooooh, Facebook, you lured me in. You tantalized me with gossip on which members of the senior class had gotten into their top choice law school... and which hadn't. You teased me with friend requests from frat boys my sorority didn't associate with because of their "rebel" reputation.

And so I gave in.

When I graduated, I had 100 friends, including many people I'd only seen in passing during my four years on campus. But that was ok. I figured, who knows? Maybe we'll become best of friends as we move on and move away from college, connected by this common thread of Facebook.

WRONG.

I don't think I've talked to 90 percent of those people over the past six years.

But I didn't learn my lesson. Instead, I started adding more and more friends...

Hey, didn't I sit next to you once in chem lab?
Hi, didn't I date your sister's best friend's brother for 10 days in middle school?
Um, didn't I get drunk with you one night sophomore year?

I created some real quality relationships thanks to Facebook.

I knew which of my college friends were getting married before they even called me to announce their big news.

I knew who from my high school was having a baby, what that baby's name was going to be (after, of course, voting in an unofficial tally on their wall), and saw their first sonogram picture.

I knew when my co-workers were looking to leave the company before the boss did.

Yup, thanks to dear old Facebook, I knew it all... heck, once I even knew a friend had been dumped by her boyfriend before she did.

Unfortunately, Facebook, as with so many good things, our relationship has pitter-pattered to an end. I still enjoy wasting time on you, but not as much as I used to. Instead, I've found a new way to legally cyber-stalk family, friends, and strangers from across the country. I've moved on...

...to Twitter!

LOL was this the inspired post?! LOL I'm addicted to twitter too, when I'm at home!

I used to facebook stalk people and then I started thinking about who could be stalking me and I got scared.

It's been awhile since I have logged on now!

Yes I too am a facebook-aholic, as well as a twitter-aholic, and turning into a blog-aholic. Oh well nobody can say we arent taking advantage of all technology has to offer ;) cute post

Okay...for like the the past month or more I have been thinking the same thing! Many times I wanted to post as my update "I am so over you, FB!" I too have succumb to Twitter. Though, I don't tweet super often.

LOL! Funny b/c I started out on twitter and recently had a FB addiction. Now? Back on twitter!

So true about who we have as our "friends" on Facebook.

Lol I am having such a hard time keeping up with facebook an twitter latley

LOL. Oh that sounds so much like me. But I'm still a FB stalker and now a Twitter stalker too.

Ha! I think we are all guilty of stalking on facebook.....I have slowly become a Twitter addict as well. ;)

I am a fair weather tweeter and facebooker...

Haha great post! I have seen that video before. Have you seen this one though?

I personally don't like twitter that much, and for those who never talk to me, or I barely know. I try to talk to them every once in awhile. So at least I have a reason to have them as my friend! lol

Have a great day!

I too am obsessed. Now that I have a phone with internet access I check it at work now too. I may need to start attending therapy for this

Twitter is my new obsession! Watch out facebook! :) The bad thing is I can access Twitter at work, which we can't do with FB.

I am a Facebook addict, and I go through phases in while I am obsessed with Twitter. The kick here is that no one I know has a Twitter. Their too dumb to figure it out, so they just stick with FB...lol, that's right, I called them dumb :) I get on Twitter and catch up on what my favorite celebs are doing :)

I had a big year with facebook, but now it's twittering down a bit.

Love the video! GREAT post. I may have to use that video on my blog (with finders credit to you on course!)

I'm right there with you. Being older Facebook brought me in touch with people from all walks of my life. From high school to my last job to motherhood. It was getting more and more uncomfortable to be in touch with so many people from my past whom I would not be speaking with were it not for Facebook. I have moved on. I still peak in and keep people on who are truly friends, but have let go of an enormous amount who really were not my friends and had little or no connection to my current life.

I'm a facebook stalker... Mostly watch who my kids talk to and nephews and nieces. I have learned proper etiquette better now and may or may not narc on a nephew when they post something that only a tar paper shack type of guy would post... He "unfriended" me!!! The little turkey...

I got worn out on the Facebook after only a couple of months. I think something about social networking doesn't mix with anti-social people such as myself!

On Facebook, and am a TWITTER addict! I'm sure you could tell by my tweets. Many great friends on there.

Facebook has lost it's allure for me too. Once we were tight. TIGHT! Now we have grown apart.

Great post!! I've only been on FB for about a year and I just can't get into it. I just feel like I'm stalking my own friends!! It is all too weird for me!!

I used to waste my life on FB... now I waste it here. But I still stalk friends... and they stalk me... sigh.

:) Great video! LOL!

You know I love me some Twitter, but FB was my first love, too. And I feel like I don't give it enough attention these days - like I'm cheating on it!

I was late to the Facebook party. I got a Facebook a few months ago. It started out as pretty harmless...Now I'm all about it. I totally stalk. It's not easy when you're kind of stupid ...I run into some of the 'stalkees' in real life and it's TOUGH not to say 'OMG I can't believe Alicia's ex boyfriend LIKED that picture of you wearing that slutty skirt!!!'. Ya know? *Sigh*

Got your email about joining in the fun at the Stork Report event I'm having in Feb. YES, you are "hired"! I'd love if you'd write an article on that topic. Could you also sprinkle in something about balancing blogging, too? I'm having the worst time with that! And I don't even work (outside the home) full-time. Thanks for the offer, and I'll let you know as soon as I have a date assigned for your guest post. So excited that you'll being blogging for us!!!

Thanks for checking out my site! I'm glad you liked my $21 Jackie O dress..LOL! I love your site! You are too funny! Definitely going to follow you so I can hear more, it's kinda cyber stalking.... lol

Oh, you NAILED that!! lol I still, however, don't get twitter. I HAVE twitter. But truthfully, they are all strangers to me. Except for Demi and Ashton of course. Otherwise, who cares really, if I am in a long bathroom line and REALLLLLY have to pee, or if I just took a swig of sour milk directly out of the carton.... lol

I was anti-any of it earlier in the year, then caved in! I was a FB addict first, then Twitter. Now, I keep up with my real life friends on FB and my Internet friends on Twitter. Nice little balance, although I spend ENTIRELY too much time on both!

Oh young grasshoppa...you have joined us on the flip side! You must download TweetDeck. Trust me on this one. It has your twitter & facebook in one place. Too good to be true? Check it out & thank me later, ha! I'm following you on Twitter now too...I love me some Tweeting!

Hi there! Following from SITS!I'm a working mom also, just found your blog. Love the Facebook post!

Lol. You pretty much nailed the whole facebook thing. So true. My husband even got competitive with me for a while on trying to get more "friends." ridickerous as my two year old says.

That was a good one! I was a little late to join the Facebook scene, so it is still enough for me. I am going to enter the Twitter scence soon.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

FB is my friend too and I have twitter but just cant really get into it!

Hilarious! Okay gotta go back to work.

I work in Media, so a lot of our presentations are about the way social networking sites are changing the way we interact with each other. But one of my favorite Facebook stories is that I actually found out my cousin was gay VIA FACEBOOK! Ahh, Facebook, how I adore thee!

It's been over 18 months since my last "Tweet," but maybe I'm just not following an interesting-enough crowd!!! ;-)

Oh, I LOVE that video. I hear what you are saying about facebook...I love reconnecting with old friends, but it can become very time consuming!

So funny and true! I nominated you for an award (Im sure of many) at pinkmoss.blogspot.com

I'm with you! Facebook has lots some of its shiny new splendor for me. Twitter has replaced it and I'm having fun stalking people. Hmmm, maybe I need to start stalking you. Kidding...
