Truthful Tuesdays-- Yes, G, There Is A Santa Claus

Posted by: Confessions From A Work-At-Home Mom

Just two days til Christmas...

Two days til we hang out stockings on the fireplace, set the cookies and milk out, and wait to hear Santa and his sleigh land on our rooftop.

He can't come down our chimney--
it's "faux".

And when we wake up in the morning, I'll truly believe he's been here. Because...

Yes, G, there is a Santa Claus.

And this week, I want to know...

Do you believe, too?

Many years ago, my mom bought me the classic Christmas book, "Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus." And, yes readers, there is a real Virginia. The story is based off an actual girl named Virginia who wrote an actual letter to the New York Sun in 1897. One of that paper's columnists, Francis P. Church, wrote a reply which was published in the newspaper and has become holiday legend. Here's an excerpt:

"Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy...

"No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood."

I think it's one of the best-written, most emotionally-riveting letters I've ever read; and each year, I read it to G, just as my mother read it to me.

There may be some who say, "Why teach your child to believe in something that isn't real?"

To that, I reply:

"Says who?"

Because, in my mind and in my heart, Santa does live. He lives in the generousity of all those who donate their time to staff soup kitchens for hungry families. He lives in the spirit of those who buy gifts for complete strangers to place under my church's annual giving tree. He lives in the wink and the smile of a kind, old man at the grocery store who tries to calm my crying toddler.

Is he a real person? Maybe he was...

But his gifts... and the lessons... his undeniable spirit have taught us all most definitely are real.

So readers, is there a Santa Claus?

Well, of course he's real! If he wasn't would we still be talking about him all these years later? Santa is the embodiment of all that is good, kind and generous. He reminds us to have an open heart and to remember those less fortunate. Without Santa were would we be? In a world that is dark, cold, and lonely. So continue to teach your child(ren) about Santa; he has many lessons to share.

That's very sweet!

YES, there is a Santa!

Of course there is a Santa Claus! Love the question.

I couldn't agree more!! There IS a Santa...there are MANY Santas! Anyone who gives during the holidays is channeling Santa-ish thoughts and actions.

I recently read that famous column. It is so sweet and moving!

There is a Santa. He may just be a state of mind, or something made up, but so is Dora the Explorer! There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Love it!

I absolutely believe in Santa. Well, the spirit anyhow. But I did believe in him when I was younger, too. So much so that I didn't realize he not only used the same wrapping paper my parents used, but also had the same handwriting as my mom. In denial much?!

We will keep the spirit alive with the boys of course, until they are old enough to debate it with us!

I agree, there is a Santa Claus, but he's in the way we live our life.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'd love to get your husbands baked fries recipe! Have you posted it? Looking forward to reading more of your blog!

Have a great day! (by the way, your daughter is absolutely adorable!)

aww what a great post! of course there's a santa!

my horse is the one in the bottom picture standing in front of another horse. the others belong to other people :-)

i liked your corny ad post too. my favorite is the one where the guy pulls his deaf g/f under the tree and signs to her.

Elizabeth, I love love love the way you write. Thanks for Truthful Tuesday and Merry Christmas!!

Santa Claus is real, and his spirit lives on in the imaginations of children and the generosity of others. My niece and nephew are visiting, and they have already identified our faux fireplace as where Santa will be coming into our house because Santa is magic.

I totally agree, I believe that there is a Santa Claus. We must not stop believing.

You have an amazing way with words. I usually tend to be bored with long texts but your writing kept me in my toes. I love how you write.

from one Elizabeth to another: Merry Christmas SITSta and Happy New Year to your wonderful little family!

I ♥ this post. I'll have you know that my heart still skips a beat when I see a mall Santa. And I still peek out my window on Christmas Eve night...JUST IN CASE.

Merry Christmas to you and your family! XOXO

Great post. And although I stopped for a few years I've been believin' every since.

If we are talking Santa in the sense of flying through the sky and elves then no. But he was an actual person. He gave gifts to needy children in his town. He was a good and lovely man and it bothers me a bit that we pay homage to him by pretending he wasn't a real person.

I so enjoy your words!

I also wanted to stop by and let ya know that I finally have my slipper sock giveaway up and running on my blog, so check it out :)
