Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (I see a giveaway!)

Brown Bear, Brown Bear,
What Do You See?

I see a woman who has read the same book 17 times in the past 24 hours looking at me!

...and I know I'm not
the only one!

Being a mom means many things. It means endlessly changing diapers. It means long, often sleepless nights. It means continuously answering "what's that?". And, it means reading the same book over...

...and over...

...and over.

Right now, G is utterly fascinated with the children's classic "Brown Bear, Brown Bear". She's so in love with it that, in her fanaticism, she has ripped several of the pages (they've been saved with tape, for now). She's so in love with it that she asks me to read it every half hour of the day. She's so obsessed in love with it that I have seriously considered hiding it under the couch cushions so we can read something-- anything!-- else.

But, just as I was about to pull out my hair after pointing out the blue horse and the red bird for the umpteenth time, I came across this long-forgotten newspaper article my own mother had sent to me straight from the "Life" section of "The Cleveland Plain Dealer":

Why your child wants you to read 'Goodnight Moon' for the 400th time, and why you should do it with a smile

My mom had carefully clipped out this article months earlier, and sent it to me pressed inside the cover of (yet another) book she'd purchased for her one and only grandbaby. I'd either misplaced it, forgotten about it, set it aside (or all of the above), and came across it just as my sanity was about to snap.

I must confess, I have seriously considered murdering the yellow duck, or setting the white dog hot on the tail of the purple cat in hopes of silencing one of the two forever. But then I read this article-- and I remembered that I want my daughter to love reading. I want her to seek shelter in my lap, to lose herself in the words and images on that fragile paper. I want her to use books as a launching pad for her own dreams, hopes, and adventures.

So, Brown Bear remains on G's overflowing book shelf, ready to be repeatedly pulled out, handed to me with the demand of "Read, read", and poured over with newfound exuberance multiple times a day.

Now I want to pass G's favorite book on to you!

Haha! Gracie loves this book, too! It's such a classic. We actually don't own it, but I was planning on getting it as a Christmas gift (along with a few other favorites we check out from the library over and over and over...). Great giveaway!

You are so funny; you crack me up about wanting to "set the white dog hot on the tail of the purple cat"! :-) My little boy LOVES to read and he really likes this book, too! We only have the board book version but I would love the full version (even though I might be reading it over and over to him...). :)

I am already a follower of your blog.

Your blog is on the list of ones that I read on my blog page.

We often read LLama LLAma mad at mama
Funny post would love to get a new book. Great giveaway!

We would love to get a copy of Brown bear ... We do not own that one, but we read about the very hungry catiplier a lot. LOL

Reading is SOOOO important from day one! Is that my teacher voice I hear? Well, it's true, and it's why I am constantly sending my grandson a new book. Yes, he has a pile of them and no, there is no end in sight of me sending him more.

We read this book so often that my 4 year old has it memorized! Great giveaway.

If I happen to get picked as winner, I will graciously pass it along to another lucky commenter.

Been a follower for a little while now.

And I know my Little Nubbin' is gonna love this book someday!

I am now following you..Oh wow, that sounds kind creepy. haha!

:P

Cecilia has not yet gotten to the point to where she asks for certain books, my niece has though and I was ready to throw "Ten Little Pumpkins" out of the window after reading it 8 billion times! :)

Isn't this book written by the same author as The Hungry Caterpillar? The artwork is very similar. We have that book, but my son's book of choice is none other than Goodnight Moon. How he loves the bowl of mush and saying goodnight nobody. (I find that part just a bit odd, but he loves it.)

Ok, I nabbed your Truthful Tuesdays button. It is now proudly displayed on my page!

I read Goodnight Moon to Anthony every night. I bet he would love to read about Brown Bear too.

Karen

I already follow your blog. Great giveaway. It's one we dont own yet. :)

Funny stuff Tyler's over and over booki was One Fish Two Fish.....yep...

Oh yeah....been there, done that! We went through that phase, and I am sure we will do again w/ our youngest!

I'll just put in 1 entry since we already own it. Better if someone else who doesn't have it wins.

I follow, button, and have you on the front page of my blog.

Proud mom of three lovers of reading and one who loves to be read to- and she can't wait to learn to read! I follow your blog... because I saw the comment above about the Ronal McDonald house- whata great cause!

The story we got stuck on was Love You This Much (I think that's the name). Now we're stuck on Clifford.

My children are now 14 and 9. While it's annoying when you look back you will remember it all with love.

Merrick LOVES when I read the same book 100 times!!
Have not read this one yet!

I just ran across your blog a few weeks ago and enjoy it tremendously! My little guy loves to read too...the same books OVER and OVER and OVER again!!!

This was such a cute story. I too have read some books over and over and over again to my boys and I know just how you feel.

I have you on my blog roll already :o)

I added your button to my page

Thank you so much for the awesome comment you left on my blog! It made me laugh so hard, and I'm at the office and now I am trying to come up with a reason as to why I was laughing because the manager keeps asking. I told him I was just thinking of Dodgeball quotes. I know he doesn't believe me.

Oh well.

I am adding you to my reader because I think you are fun to read, but please don't enter me in the giveaway. I don't have little ones yet and I am sure my husband would just end up using the book as a coaster if I won it. It is much better off in the hands of an actual child as opposed to my man-child.

R loves this book too! Your blog is so cute and G is precious! Hope you dont mind if I follow!

As my first grand daughter turns 6 months old this week, what a great reminder! I have saved the books I read over and over and over again to my own daughters and the memories of reading something for the 400th time have long since slipped into my CRS file (can't remember $hit) this reminder is none too soon!

I know I will be reading "The Foot Book" and "Little Bo Peep" ad nauseum to Olivia's delight!

Peggy

Wow, so crazy. I was actually just looking for this book to buy because they didn't have it at my library. This one is a classic everyone should own! Hope I win! Oh, and I think what you're doing for Christmas is wonderful!

Gotta Love Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Goodnight Moon!!! Your DD is ADORABLE!!

What a great reminder! It sounds like the timing saved Brown Bears life too.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

This is a sweet post :). I was obsessed with Oh The Places You'll Go from Dr. Seuss when I was a kid and I know I drove my parents crazy making them read it to me lol.
Thanks for stopping by my blog on Saturday! :)

Summer is on the Happy, sad, mad or glad book right now from Seasame Street.

Good thing me and Mike take turn...Ugh!

We've read it a million times! Grace even 'reads' it with the proper cadence & everything. Yes we know that book very well in our house-ours is getting quite worn out.

I love Eric Carle but we do not have this one! Would love to have it!

Great article! We love Good Night Moon here and we read it several times a day.

Here is my comment entry!

My son loves Pat the Bunny!

I am a devoted follower :D

It's such a short time that they actually want you to read to them, with them, play with them, be with them. Have to enjoy it while it lasts for sure!

Thanks for the comment! Yeah Christmas weddings are nice, we did red and green. I will be posting pictures for my anniversary blog post next week!

Great post! I have read that book more than several times to several kids I babysit for. My brothers also loved goodnight moon and I love it too haha! Great article definitely interesting, thanks for sharing!

Oh the beloved Brown Bear. :) All my girls love this book, including my little Baby Pants who is almost 2. We had a CD that sang the words of the book to a particular tune...so I sing it to my girls that way too. And Baby Pants runs around the house singing "Lello Duck...Lello Duck...Wha Da You Sheee??"

My recommendation is getting the hardback book with the hard pages, no more tearing! :)

We have A LOT of books in this house but Brown Bear is not one of them!!!

Hi! Thanks for the birthday wishes on Monday! Yes, he is definitly a keeper :)

My girls love reading too! And I love what you wrote about rememebering to keep reading witha smile, even though I know hard that can be sometimes, lol!

Hope your haing a great week!

Right now with us it's a little einstein. When you count the number one you know the fun has just begun... You wouldn't think a 1 year old had the capacity to know if you skip a page but Dang if he doesn't pitch a fit if its not in order. Eric Carle is always a winner with Levi too though. This week its the Angry Ladybug. That article made me smile. Thank your mom for me!

Don't count me in the giveaway as I don't have any wee ones of my own yet. But I do have to say that I think it's so great that you're reading to your baby girl. When she gets older she will love to read. My mom read to me and she continued to even when I was old enough to read myself. It became a tradition to read aloud at night, and we'd all take turns. It was a great learning/bonding experience. Hopefully she'll be interested in a new book soon! :-)

That is a great book, definitely a favorite here too.

I would love this to read to my little ones!

I have added you to my blogroll. :)

My baby loves this book too. I love the bright colors of all the Eric Carle books. Reading is such a wonderful tradition to start early!

Aw, this is one of my all-time favorites and was the first book I bought my (just-turned-one) nephew when he was still in my sister's tummy!

Came by to say hey after seeing you over @my place on this SITS Saturday — I will definitely be back!

Merry Christmas :-)
