A Tale Of Two Wardrobes

Posted by: Confessions From A Work-At-Home Mom

You could call me Dr. Jekyll & Ms. Hyde.

During the work day, I don't just dress for success. I dress to impress.

You see, I work with this girl. She is one of our reporters, and she is hands down one of the most fashionable people I have ever worked with/known/seen/heard of. She just has it all together.

But it's not just her. It's everyone I work with. These girls/women have style... flare... (I'm starting to sound like the theme song from "The Nanny")... consultants. Plus, some of them have clothing/hair/make-up budgets built into their contracts at the TV station. As a lowly producer who merely works behind the scenes, I do not. So, new clothing and accessories ends up at the very bottom of my shopping list, far below diapers, wipes, cheesy poofs and board books.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. It just means I have to be creative with what I've got. Such as this...

I bought this skirt (see left) my sophomore year of college. It's gone in and out of style twice since then, but I've held on to it over the years! The shoes are from Payless (proof that even the cheapest stores can have great style).

Or, consider this ensemble (at right): I bought every single piece of it at Tar-jay ("Target" to those of you who aren't in the know). I think it all came in-- shoes included-- at less than $75!

Those pictures would showcase my "Dr. Jekyll" character-- the sharp-dressed, career-centric woman. But when I get home... I change... I morph... I evolve... into the messy, the sloppy, the slovenly Ms. Hyde. And honestly sometimes I want to "hyde" from the public eye when I'm dressed in my weekend/weeknight clothes.

In fact, even though I gave DH the task of photographing me in my off-the-job wear, he had a hard time doing it. Most of the time, I hid or ducked away from the camera's private eye. Other times, I'd simply take the camera away from him and erase the pictures he'd just taken. Here are the only weekend-wear pictures he could snap over his two-week-long "assignment":

OK, the last picture isn't actually me... It's DH's feet in my purple Crocs. I took it to get back at him for the picture of me in my warm-ups!

On the weekends, I never wear skirts or dresses. I live in my jeans-- and not my "dress down Friday" pair. I mean, my gritty, nasty, have a huge whole in the a$$ jeans. I don't wear make-up, and usually, I don't bother putting in my contacts either. Sometimes, I even skip brushing my hair in the morning. On the weekends, I really look like a schlub.

But you know what? That fact doesn't really bother this wanna-be-fashionista. I love that I can look forward to dressing down (ok, way down) on the weekends. My weekend wardrobe truly signifies my priorities when I'm off the job-- it's not impressing anybody, it's being myself and having a good time kicking back and relaxing with my family.

How do you kick back and relax after work and on the weekends?

You're so cute! Um..I don't work, but I do stay in my robe till I have somewhere to go...like yesterday I wore it all day and got dressed at 4:30..so bad! Even my son when he came home from school was like, Mom, you're still in your robe! Dude!

Anyway..so it's pretty much eitehr robe or workout clothes during the week and I actually tend to dress nicer on the weekends...:)

I'm so all about the dress-down. I agree with you that it symbolizes your commitment to your family. My new hubby recently informed me that he felt he was getting shafted, because I dress up for work more than I do for him. So, I promised to keep the "fancy" stuff on for our once-a-week date. Even if the date is dominos and a movie at home. =)

This is too funny because I'm getting ready to post about how I feel like I'm fashionably (is that even a word) challenged since I started staying home and doing daycare. You'll have to check it out, I'm a mess!

I'm retired, so most of the time you'll find me in jeans and a colored thermal shirt from Tar-jay....

With that said, I'm the (volunteer) Chairman of Disaster Services of the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City (imagine saying that 5 times really fast; yes, that's my title and it sucks saying it even once, it's so darn long), and I have to go into the office one day a week.

Today is that day - and I am dressed to KILL! Yeah, Stacy & Clinton on "What Not to Wear" would find NOTHING negative to say about what I'm wearing right now as I get ready to leave. Today, it's all about the browns - brown suede pumps, brown tweed pants, and a killer brownish sweater from Coldwater Creek....I am HOT! :)

But tomorrow? I'd be their worst nightmare.

Sherri

Well, since I never wear make up and live in jeans, tees, sweats and the like, my weekends are not much different! If we go out I brush my hair.

are we twins? i think i've mentioned that before. seriously sickening how alike we are.

I work with kids doing athletic development and sports performance. i am "fortunate" enough to be able to wear sweats and t-shirts to work. crazy, I know.

i'm ALWAYS in sweats. occasionally jeans if i go grocery shopping. church is the most i get dressed up for and even that isn't super dressy.

so yeah, i'm always kicked back... for me, it's taking out my contacts and wearing my glasses the rest of the night

When I get home from work, I'm always in my lulu lemon's or jeans! Comfort!!! That's all I want when I'm running after my little ones!

LOL I thought I was the only one who did this. Even tho I don't work outside the home I try to make sure I look super nice during the week so that when I'm running in & out the kids' schools or the store or wherever, I don't get that "ooohhhh....she MUST be a housewife" look. But as soon as the kids are home I change. Almost immediately. Off goes the nice stuff & bring on the yoga pants & tank tops. (**Sometimes I even wear that during the week days between errands. But don't tell anyone!**)

Really? That's all you've got? Wow! I could put you to shame. See, I do stay at home all week with the kids, and half of the time I am lucky to put on deodorant before noon, let alone shower! I never wear make-up. So when the weekend rolls around, and I have Andy here to help me out, I can shower and I actually "dress up" a little. Yeah, I get to put on jeans and somewhat cute shirts...your dress down attire ;) Besides, when I look at the pictures of you in your "slovenly" stuff, I think "hmm, that's cute!" Ha ha ha. BUT...and there's always a but, I do relate. Because my closet if chock full of super cute and stylish clothes. Once upon a time I did work in the corporate world as a sales manager. So I look longingly at those clothes until Sunday, when I wear them to church. Whew, what a long comment.

Let me just say you are just too cute!

You could definitely be in front of the camera!! You are adorable (and fashionable)...

As for my fashion sense, I've never been one to spend gobs of money on fashonista stuff... But it's funny, I get comments now all the time about looking "so put together"... if they only knew!!! (And I could live in overalls or sweats)

I can't believe you want to hide from the camera. Crazy! I love mugging for a shot!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog and for loving my designs. I really appreciate it! :)

I work from home, so yeah.. The kids are embarrassed when I drop them off at the bus. I may or may not have my hair brushed yet. I may be brushing it in front of the bus line up...
And I only dress up enough in the morning for the things I have to do after work. The only time I get dressed up is for church. and for that matter, the only time I bother to put on makeup.
What a "glamorous" job you've got! to have to compete with those women! Sounds like fun anyway!
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today! Please come back again!
Your little girl is such a doll!

thanks for stopping by. You're too cute and everything you wear looks cute...trust me.

I'm with you completely. That's the best part of being home, wearing the grungiest, most comfortable of everything we own.! Bravo to you!

I'm kinda strange.....
Since I stay at home I get to wear my sweats whenever I want, however, I don't like to wear my sweats. I mean, they have to be "dressy" sweats! I like to dress nice, even if I'm not leaving the house, example, jeans and a nice shirt. Maybe I'm like this because I never get to wear nice dressy clothes.
Told ya I was strange!

Thanks for visiting...I think you and I may have a lot in common. Nice to meet you. :) And oh yes, the binky...we are now trying to determine when we start the 'disappearing' act for that thing. TBD.

Your work looks are fantastic. I too have to dress up for work most of the time so that means on the weekends my fashion dies. Unless I have something fabulous to dress up for...but then I try to go with something that is almost a little too fun for work. Men really have it so much easier in this department.

I work from home, so I pretty much wear whatever and whenever. Though I do like looking nice when we go out into town. I don't know why it's so important - the area we live in? PJs are like a town uniform. That or overalls. And wranglers. Anyway... I never really have a reason to wear nice clothes - not many fancy places to go, not many real huge functions to go to. I do love shopping, though, haha! I'm a jeans and t-shirt girl all the way, just depends on what i'm doing that day if it's a "nice" tee or not.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I love this post. I feel the exact opposite...I wear jeans and t-shirts every day -waitress at Family's Restaurant) So on the weekends I want to dress up! Your outfits were so cute! I wish that I had another couple of mommies here in the house to influence me to dress better!! LOL-- they could help take care of the dusting-- Mount Washmore-- and dishes too!

Since I stay at home since the unfortunate demise of my career, I pretty much consider your weekend wear dressing up! It's a good day when I make it out of my jammies and my hair meets brush!

I love the shoes in the second picture!!

I'm guilty of wearing exercise clothes way too much...and I rarely exercise. Or do Yoga.

Hi there! Over from SITS, courtesy of your stopover at my blog (that was a nice treat.) What a beautiful family you have. And you look lovely in those stylin' shots from today's post. And the way you describe your weekend look is, unfortunately, my everyday look. Also, maybe I should stop eating Nutella by the spoon, which is what I'm doing now. I think that's the subtext here. What we do on weekends is go to the gym, get some bagels, take a drive into city or kick around house, out to dinner. Maybe see a local production of something. Too much food focus, I guess.

I'm guilty with having "hole in the ass" pants. *sigh* I finally just got rid of them the other day after my son ran up to me and tried to mess with it. lmao
I dress down too much. And I love your outfits especially the first one!! hawt!
Oh and thanks for finding my blog! And now, I can stalk yours!

Thanks for stopping by!

I lost my job in May but up until then I teetered around on 4" heels and always wore a skirt. I would have half of my clothes off in the car on the way home just in anticipation of my pajama pants.

Every once in a while, I'll put those heels on and do the dishes because I miss them.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I don't get out of my sweats most days:)

Love that skirt!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I do try to be presentable even if at home, but if I'm going out I do try to look good because my sons are so damn cute I can't look like a hag from heck when I'm with them :D
